I'm in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for a work trip this week, but I had a chance to go out to Lancaster County where the Amish can be found. My coworkers and I were famished after our flight in, so we stopped at the first "authentically" looking Pennsylvania Dutch Smorgasbord restaurant. This one was called Good 'N Plenty.
The building was a compound comprised of a bakery, multiple gift shops, and at least two dining areas. We were given the choice of Smorgasbord dining and ordering a la carte from the Harvest Menu. Depending on your choice, you are taken to the corresponding dining room. The hostess explained the smorgasbord which is communal all-you-can eat family dining, and you have a selection of meats, vegetables, and dessert. Overwhelmed with that option, we chose the Harvest Menu. It seemed more price-conscious since going with communal option was going to cost us $19.95 each!
We were led to our dining room, and I ordered the vegetarian platter and chose Chow Chow (picked vegetables), Sweet Corn, Buttered Noodles, and the Vegetable of the Day (green peas). The food came out almost instantaneously, so we figured most of it was prepared well in advance. I may have had high expectations, but the food overall was very bland and lacked any character. One of my coworkers said it seemed like a watered down version of southern cooking, and I will have to agree with him.
All in all, we weren't terribly satisfied with the food, but it may have been the restaurant we chose.
